Data Breach

Nebraska medical center discovers data breach by a rouge insider.

On December 4, 2019, Nebraska Medicine reported a data breach after it found that an employee accessed sensitive patient data, including medical records and Social Security numbers, which was beyond the scope of his responsibilities. The compromised information includes names; addresses; dates of birth; medical record numbers; Social Security numbers; license numbers; and clinical information such as physician notes, laboratory results, and imaging data.

During an internal security audit of the electronic medical record system, the medical center found that the employee had access to patient records from July 11, 2019, to October 1, 2019, which was when the breach was discovered. Once the breach was discovered, it immediately took steps to restrict the access and the employee in question was fired after the investigation.

Nebraska Medicine has not released any statement regarding the exact number of patients whose data has been affected, but these patients have been notified. Apart from that, the patients have been offered complimentary credit monitoring services for a year as a precaution.
