Data Breach

Data breach at UniCredit exposes 3 million customers' records.

On October 28, 2019, Italian global banking and financial services company UniCredit revealed that a data breach in the firm affected 3 million customers' records. The compromised information includes customers’ names, cities, telephone numbers, and emails.

What happened.

UniCredit confirmed that the incident involved a file that was created in 2015. The file contained personal details of the customers in Italy. Fortunately, no customer financial information has been compromised in the breach. According to UniCredit, "Since 2016, the Group has invested an additional 2.4 billion euros in upgrading and strengthening its IT systems and cybersecurity. Customer data safety and security is UniCredit's top priority and in June 2019, the Group implemented a new strong identification process for access to its web and mobile services, as well as payment transactions."

The bank did not disclose details on how the breach occurred. They have notified the relevant authorities and launched an investigation. They are also currently in the process of notifying clients regarding the attack via mail and online banking notifications.
