On February 20, 2019, Memorial Hospital in Gulfport, Mississippi notified 30,000 patients about an email phishing attack in December 2018 that might have exposed personal information of patients. The data contained in the compromised email account contained patients' names, dates of birth, health information, and services provided at the hospital. Social security numbers of some of the patients were also exposed.
In December 2018, an employee at the hospital unknowingly opened a phishing email which allowed an unauthorized user to gain access to patient health information stored in the email account. As soon as the hospital detected the attack, they immediately secured the account and began investigations. The hospital is offering a year of free credit monitoring and identity protection services to all the affected patients whose social security numbers were compromised.
