On February 28, 2019, Trend Micro released a report on a new phishing scam that has targeted the owners of popular Instagram accounts with the number of followers ranging between 15,000 and 70,000. The perpetrators are identified as a group of Turkish-speaking hackers.
The scam involved a series of emails that appeared to be from Instagram about offering a verified badge for their account.
Any user who clicked on the hyperlink was redirected to a phishing web page that asked for the username, password, full name, address, e-mail, and date of birth—all in return for the coveted badge.
Hackers then used the information to change the primary email and password information so the original user could no longer log in or recover the account. The victims ranged from famous actors and singers to owners of startup businesses.
Hackers have threatened to delete the account or never return the stolen profile unless the victim pays a ransom or sends nude photos or videos.
