Ransomware

Campbell County Health network and services affected by a ransomware attack.

On September 20, 2019, Campbell County Health (CCH), a healthcare system in Gillette, Wyoming, announced that its network has fallen victim to a ransomware attack. All the computers in the network are inaccessible; services such as inpatient admissions, radiology exams and procedures, and surgeries have also been disrupted.

The aftermath.

Steve Crichton, vice president of plant and facilities for CCH, said that CCH is moving its patients to its other hospitals in Casper, Sheridan, and Rapid City, South Dakota until its services are restored. CCH has hired third-party cybersecurity experts to investigate the incident, and the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the governors’ office have all been informed. The cybersecurity team is currently evaluating the damage and is in the process of restoring the systems. So far, there has been no evidence of the patients’ data being stolen.
