Texas city falls victim to Ryuk ransomware.

On February 17, 2020, Port Lavaca, Texas revealed that its City Hall servers were affected by Ryuk ransomware. Mayor Jack Whitlow confirmed that no data was compromised in the attack and officials are working on restoring the systems.

The incident affected Port Lavaca City Hall's billing and auto-pay systems. The servers for water, sewer, and the police department were not affected in the attack. City officials confirmed that the recovery process has set Port Lavaca back nearly $50,000 which will be reimbursed by the city's insurance policy.

Investigations revealed that the virus was deployed into the network via a malicious email. The city is purchasing new servers, routers, and computers to replace infected software, and the data is being restored from backups. The mayor said that ransom negotiations will only be handled by the FBI, which decided not to pay the ransom.
