In December 2019, the Southeastern Minnesota Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (SEMOMS) medical center released a notice on its website stating that its network was affected by a ransomware attack. The attack may have compromised patient health information (PHI).
The breach was discovered on September 23, 2019, when one of SEMOMS' servers was shut down by ransomware. Its internal IT security team immediately took steps to restore the services, and the medical center also hired a cybersecurity forensics expert to investigate the extent of the breach. However, they were unable to find if the patients’ names and X-ray records were exposed.
Fortunately, patients’ financial data, medical information, and Social Security numbers were not affected in the breach. The hospital has taken steps to notify all the potentially affected clients via letters. To prevent such incidents in the future, SEMOMS is working on revising its existing security practices.
