Wyoming Area School District pays $38,000 to hackers following a ransomware attack.

On October 1, 2019, Wyoming Area School District revealed that ransomware has been affecting its network for weeks, leaving its computers inaccessible. Since school officials were unable to regain access, they had to give in to the demands of the hackers and pay a ransom of $38,000 in Bitcoin.

The hack occurred in mid-July; students and school officials noticed the incident when they were unable to access course material. Though the school district hired a third-party forensics company to restore access to the system, it was unsuccessful. In the end, they agreed to the ransom demand in exchange for decryption keys. Having been insured in case of events like these, Wyoming Area School District was able to claim $28,000 as insurance damages. School officials are working on improving the security system to prevent future attacks.
